I have an old hard drive with some photos on that i want to retrieve. is there a way i can do it without takin my pc apart Via usb or something

Assuming your old computer works, I think there's a way in Windows to create a network and connect the two computers with an ethernet cabe. Then, with your new computer, you could access your old hard drive.

Then again, maybe you knew that?

Yes, a network would work, but it's a lot of work for a one-time job. Probably the best way is to plug in a USB drive to the old computer, copy the photos to it, then walk to the other computer and copy to it. Or email them to a (new??) Gmail or Yahoo account, mailing photos to yourself is easy with these. Or buy a program that uses a PHYSICAL cable connection from one computer to the other. "Laplink" is an actual program and also a generic term for this, cost something around $20 to $40 especially if you ask Mr Piratebay for help with the software.



Oh. Well there's a relevant detail.

Yes, you'll have to install or attach the hard drive to another computer physically. It takes a computer to actually drive a hard drive. You or someone will have to take the case off a working computer and plug in or attach the hard drive, until the working computer can "see" it. Then you can copy it off.

If it's a good drive, you can go one more step and install it as a second (or third, etc) hard drive.

But to try to answer the question, you can't do anything with that hard drive unless it's attached to some working computer.

You have said you don't want to open the case, but that would be the easiest thing to do, i.e., install it into your present computer as a second drive. You would need the proper cable and be sure to change the pin settings on the HD to "slave."
The second easiest solutions, IMHO, would be to install the old HD into an external hard drive case that has its own power supply and an USB connection.

There is a way, pay someone who knows what the fuck they are doing.

As mentioned, got to computer store. Spend approximately $20 for the USB caddy. You stick your old drive into it (sound familiar?) and plug the USB into you computer. windows will recognize it as a second drive. Just drag and drop the files onto your main drive.

It literally only takes a minute to pop your old HD into an external enclosure, so you can bring your HD into a store and ask them to do that while you watch.

They don't need to plug it into a computer, so you ensure nobody snoops around on your HD by taking it into a back room or anything.

And it's worth spending an afternoon to get familiar with 3 key utilities to protect yourself:
