For your information;
I just received an order of vitamins from the US. The declared value was $35 US. I was charged 1,272 baht taxes (About $39.75 US).
The worst part is that I ordered vitamins from Australia the last time and there was no tax. The last item shipped from the US via USPS item also had no tax.
The last thing before this that was shipped via FedEx was taxed at 30 percent. I have learned my lesson and will never use the FedEx thieves network again.

You need the sender to under value the goods.
It's the same here in the Uk when i regularly buy porn dvds from the US. On the customs declaration if the value is over £18 (£40 for gifts) VAT is charged (now 20%?). There is also a Royal Mail handling charge of £8.00.
The package also takes longer then normal to reach me. An extra week on average before i get notification to collect from the Royal Mail depot.
UK Customs fees/VAT is only payable on goods sent from outside the EU.
Fortunately, most of my US porn retailers are happy to lie on the customs declaration. It may be more difficult with mainstream retailers.
The other issue would be if customs officials opened a package for inspection and found an invoice. Never had a package opened from the US...but had at least 2 opened from Holland. I wonder why???

They do have sales tax here in LOS so one has to think imported goods should be taxed.

i like to wear boots when i am working and find catterpillar the best brand, unfortunately i have size 15 feet and caterpillar only ship to ireland up to size 12.
i ordered a pair from the us for $105 and $48 shipping which was ok as the euro was strong against the dollar at the time.
then fedex tell me that i have to pay another 48euro in duty before i can get my hands on them.
next pair i bought i got shipped to a friend in boston who posted them to me as a "gift" haha
so fuck fedex and the irish government

There is no customs exempt for shipped items declared as gifts, nowhere in the world.
Sometimes smaller shipments get through unnoticed, in this case you're lucky.
Once tax and customs duties are applied, all shipping agents also charge you a handling fee, which in the case of lower valued goods can exceed the customs and duty amount.

Went through this exact thing yesterday with FedEx. Ordered an ankle brace for $30 plus another $35 for shipping, about 2100 Baht total. Was charged 1745 Baht in duty and service charges. Everything is spelled out in black and white on about three different customs forms and two FedEx forms. Was listed as an orthopedic device, valued at $30.
Oddest thing was, they wouldn't send the package out from Bangkok until I emailed a signed ID copy of the person that it was addressed to.

Very poor advice. All countries I know charge customs on gifts, but many allow an exemption if they are below a certain price. Seems fair, actually. In all countries I know, you'll pay some sort of taxes on that gift when you buy it.

This is transient. TNA and the likes are always clean, but they have links that go to dodgy sites. The links are pretty much random, so if you wait a minute, or hit reload, the warning will usually disappear.
And not only TNA by a long shot. Even non-pr0n sites get this.

I had to read that this wasn't a thread dug up from 5 or more years ago as every man, woman and dog knows that you are likely to get screwed when ordering direct and using one of the big couriers, as the shipper is likely to put the real value and description on the package to avoid getting done themselves.
This very subject was covered at some length not so long ago in a thread started by MM asking about importing things into LOS.

By all means, there are exemptions on customs and excise duties for articles with a low value. The amount is different in every Country. But this has nothing to do with the declaration of a shipped item as a gift.

Thats an interesting approach: By obeying to the rules and staying legal you get screwed? So, you are importing an item, and in order to scam the authorities, you have the value underdeclared. According to your post, you do this to avoid getting screwed?
Does that approach also apply to say, bars? A bar that does not participate in scams like bill padding, overcharging on drinks, watering down the Alcohol content, is getting screwed as they are making less money as they would in case they participated in these scams?
What is the difference between these two affairs?

What I want to know is why does FedEx get such a BIG tax and service charge and USPS has a much more reasonable charge.
Here is the example; In the past year I bought two Garmin GPS units. One was bought from a seller who refused to use USPS and insisted on FedEx. The other was bought from a seller who agreed to ship via USPS. Both units were around the $200 - $250 price range. The FedEx unit was taxed at more than 2,000 baht or about $62.50. The unit shipped via USPS was taxed 320 baht or about $10. No one can tell me that FedEx is not in bed with Thai customs.
In the future, I'll do without something I want rather than have it shipped FedEx. I have sent the thieves emails bitching about their phony charges but have received no answers.

USPS items are customs-cleared by the local Thai Post, FedEx ain't. They have their own agents, resulting in much faster clearance, for a fee ...
I had not so long ago tracked the proceedings of an USPS parcel which I had already written off. It arrived after about 2 month, and according to the stamps and documentation enclosed, it did sit more than 5 weeks at the Bangkok Airport customs office, before a small charge (If I remember correctly it was about 250 Baht for an item valued 60 US$ plus shipping) was charged, and then delivered about one week later.
I have received FedEx parcels too, cant remember the full details, but the handling fees were in the 1000 Baht range.
Up to you if you want to wait several weeks in order to save 1000 Baht or more, or not.

Actually the USPS shipped items took not more than ten days. I am pleased with their service. The cost is not much different from FedEx so the shipping savings is minimal. This last FedEx shipment took a couple of extra days because they needed a copy of my Passport. That's bullshit too. Most porn films these days are 6-7 GB. I either split on to 2 dvd+r's or burned on a Dual layer dvd.
Looking at paysites where you 'download to own' a film the specs are lower than normal
I have the dvd 'Teens with Tits 9'. It's going to be about 5-6GB

Yep, USPS Priority Mail.
See, the thing is, I had ordered something from Amazon while I was in the USA that said 3-6 day shipping time. I had 7 days before leaving, so I had it sent to my ex-wife's home.
Then I got a letter from Amazon saying that the product would arrive in 6-12 days!
So, I went to the local podunk post office in a town of 1000 and asked the postman about shipping to Thailand. He told me USPS Priority would arrive in 7 days or less. What does he know, I suppose? He's probably never been out of California. But, I believed him. I bought a small packet, addressed it, filled in the customs form, and bought the stamps ($13USD).
I gave the package to my daughter and asked her to insert the contents of the package from Amazon into the box, seal it, and drop it off at a post box.
It arrived the day I left (about 2 hours after my flight departed).
Still waiting.

Before April, I was getting two or three packages sent a month by USPS. It was almost clockwork, USPS Express (EMS) took one calendar week and USPS Priority mail took two weeks, almost to the day. Hadn't had one more than a day or two off, and had no boxes go missing, nor any of them opened by Thai Customs. Some got hit for duty without being opened, but surprisingly, most didn't
Since the Red Shirt stuff kicked off in April, I have had one Express package go completely missing (they claim it never entered the country), two Express packages seized, three Priority packages opened and resealed by Customs (but charged duty and delivered) and one Priority package seized.
Bangkok Customs sends the seized packages for Pattaya to Laem Chabang where they decide if you can have it or not. They'll send a Customs notice, then you must go personally to pick up the package, if they decide to give it to you. To date, the three packages seized were not released, even after visiting the Customs office. There was nothing illegal inside any of them. I assume they think they will make more reselling the items than what they would get for duty.
The number of people in line with the same letter (white paper with green print with a 0 Baht duty charge) tells me I'm far from the only one losing packages to them.
