On the beach last night I noticed they had switched off the road lights just before midnight. I thought it was for the fireworks, but I saw later that WS was in the black... (at least 30-40 minutes?) and that they had a second power cut maybe 1 hour later. Not sure that the agogos, discos and restaurants appreciated that Posted Image , except the lucky few who still had electricity, like Spanky's. I only walk down to Soi Diamond; don't know the situation in FLB?

Except the Walking Street Club (the one with the car on the wall) who had light/electrics (and that night a 200 baht entry ticket), the first part of WS was really dark. Better for everyone to stay close to their group because if you lost it, it must be very difficult to find it again. Very dark and most people walking quickly toward the beach... and the light. Not the best way to enter 2013...

FLB was dark for a little over an hour total with the two power outages. The first happened seconds after the midnight countdown finished.
As you say, great start to 2013.

We still managed to carry on. Many thanks to everyone who stayed with us while we waited for lights and air con to start again.

Having that happen practically on the stroke of midnight must have seemed 'arranged'.....
They guy who got the short straw at the power station was not happy to be at work!
I suppose the fireworks looked special though.

Many people commented that they thought it was planned. One fellow was in Sapphire when it happened and mentioned he thought it was part of the show.
Credit to the power company for being able to get their truck down Walking Street with the massive number of people coming from Bali Hai. I'm wondering if the concert was cut short as well.
The fireworks were very good, especially with the street dark.

Power cuts were partly caused by idiots firing the massive party poppers up in the air causing the long strands of tinsel to hit the power lines. I saw 3 transformers blow.

On the up side Blues Factory is fed by another power supply and was fine all night.

I did, too, although I was in WhatsUp. I thought it was for effect, as everyone pulled the mini party poppers all at once in near total darkness. It was only when the lights didn't go on again after 10 minutes or so that people figured out something was wrong.

Great shots there guys, I have to say 1 hour isn't bad. If it was in the Philippines it would have taken hours, if not the next morning. Be in Pats in a couple days.

It normally takes hours in Thailand too..............

.....I am not suggesting that somebody that had invested alot of money in other entertainment venues outside of the effected area and wanted more punters there actually paid for it to happen.. I mean that would put personal profit ahead of Thailand's Tourist reputation.... Perish the thought..

Same on walking street last night and the year before. There's a video on Facebook I'll try to hook in here that shows one of those poppers that shoot foil streamers hitting the power wires and the transformer blowing and then...darkness.

Christmas Day in this part of Nong Khai and the electric power went at 10:00am. A check down the road and engineers were working on a PLANNED power outage which they said would last until 5pm. I came back shortly before.
